1:45pm Lazy Sunday mornings quickly turn into cabin-fevered afternoons, so the Pilgers throw on their shoes and coats to head out for a Family Adventure Day.
1:52pm Judah’s coat was wrong—a quick layer change and they’re ready to go.
1:56pm The whole family tumbles into the car.
1:57pm The whole family tumbles out of the car--someone forgot something, but can't remember what it is. Everyone's still smiling.
2:10pm The Pilgers arrive at The Principal’s Office, the first stop on their adventure, for some coffee and pastries. Lauren gets the chai, Brian the Ethiopian pour over, the boys each get water. Shiloh orders a peanut butter cookie, Judah opts for a croissant.
2:13pm Brian is back at the counter: Judah, correcting his croissant mistake, asks if he can have a peanut butter cookie instead.
3:00pm Caffeine topped off, pastry plates empty, the family heads out of PO. Lauren is glad that the weather is warmer than it was supposed to be.
3:12pm The Pilgers arrive at Red Rock Canyon Open Space for a bit of a hike and some fresh air. The boys run and run, backed by a royal blue sky. They want to be carried for a while, and then they run some more. In a glowing moment of brother affection, the boys hold hands off into the tall native grass—it lasts only a second, but their parents see it, so it will last forever. The boys are off quick to scramble up the rusty red walls, making mom nervous, making dad grin.
4:15pm No one wants to leave the open space, but everyone wants hot chocolate, so its back in the car to their favorite coffee shop in a tiny house.
4:25pm The Pilgers find a parallel spot out in front of Story Coffee, and the boys race to the place that holds magic: the little window on the front of the bar featuring the baked goods. Scones and almond milk hot chocolates for the boys, hot tea for mom and dad, and the whole family tucked into the four seats at the high tables overlooking a busy downtown. Everyone is still smiling.
5:00pm Back home, shoes kicked off by the door, coats hung up and only one on the floor, the Pilgers are snugged in for the evening, satisfied with a quick adventure.
